Goals

Everyone should set some sort of goal or goals in their life.  It helps give you initiative to do something and also gives you an indicator if you are able to achieve it.  Goals are like levels in a computer game.  You must reach the level and that is your goal.  After you reach it, you have another level to finish and then another, and another, and another, and another, and…  Well, you get the idea.  Goals are like that too, you achieve your goal, and then you set another one, and then another, and another, and another, and another, and…(STOP IT!)  If you want to be successful in whatever you do, you need to set goals.  Not any old goal, but SMART goals.

Specific-
Goals need to point out exactly what you want to achieve. For example, “I will run 40 min 4 times a week for 7 weeks,” would be more specific than “I will run.” The first one states what your exact goal is. However, the second one is just very general and vague.  It doesn’t say when, how long, or how many times.
Measurable-
You need to be able to measure how well you are doing and know if you are on track or not.  For example, you will know when you are halfway there or when you have actually accomplished your goal.  For instance, Bob’s goal last year was to run 10K in under 30 minutes.  However, by the end of the year, Bob could manage 10K in 28 minutes.  He knows that he has achieved his goal.

Achievable-
You must create goals that can be achieved.  You can do this by trying to find ways that can help you attain the goal that you have set.
Realistic-
Goals need to aim high but, they also need to be realistic.  They need to be within your capabilities but still make you push higher. Your goals must be something that you are willing to spend time and effort on, not just a goal that you make but never try to reach.
Timed-
Lastly, you have to set a deadline for your goals.  Otherwise, you will always put it off until later and will never accomplish it because there is no need to hurry to get it done.  By setting a time for when your goal should be accomplished, you give yourself a goal within a goal.
