Suicide Prevention

Just in case you meet a friend, family member, co-worker, or anyone else that displays warning signs of suicide, here is a script that can help you help them.  This script can act as a basic guideline for you on how to help the other person.
You: Y
Other person: O

Y: Hey, what’s up, man!
O: I hate life.
Y: Really? Why’s that so?
O: You won’t understand. Nobody understands!  Life is hopeless for me!
Y: Hey, I really want to help.  Life can’t be that bad for anyone.  There are ups and downs in life and you’re just probably in one of those down times.
O: Yeah, I really am in one of those down times.  My Dad died a couple of days ago and my Mom just broke-down.   My grades have come to an all-time low and I have to take care of my 3 younger siblings because my Mom is always in her room crying.
Y: Wow, you are in a tight situation right now.  Tell me more (Top-tip: Let the person express their feelings and allow them to explain what is happening in their life that pushes them to the brink of suicide)
O: On top of all that, my girlfriend just broke up with me yesterday and I got suspended for excessive tardiness at school and this is my 2nd suspension this year.  I got kicked of the Hong Kong U-20 soccer team because I couldn’t go to practices and amidst all this, I have to apply for college but I don’t have enough money to pay for the application fees.  I’m thinking of suicide.
Y: I can understand why you feel this way…
O: Really?
Y: Yeah, of course! Everyone has times when they feel everything is against them.  I felt exactly the same way you felt a couple months ago but for different reasons. (Top-tip: Try to make the person feel less alone and show them that you are sympathetic towards them and that everyone goes through hard times as well)
O: Well, the reasons that you were upset over are quite trivial compared with mine. No one understands!  Nothing can be worse than the situation I’m in right now!
Y: That is very tragic.  However, if nothing can be worse, then things can only get better right? (Top-tip: Try to let the person see that this is just a down point in life and that things can get better)
O: Well, I guess you’re right.  If I do push through this situation, things should go uphill from here.
Y: That’s the Spirit!  If you like you need help, I’ll always be there for you!  Here’s my business card.  (Top-tip: Find someone or be that someone the person can turn to for help when they are in times of crisis)
O: Thanks man, you’re the best!  I now have new hope for my life!
